<strong>and</strong> “I” as opposed to third person pronouns or more <strong>for</strong>mal language<br />

are ways of building connections (Ginns et al., 2013).<br />

Instructional Text<br />

The text, highlighted in yellow above, points to some of the language<br />

choices made in an instructional text to build connection <strong>and</strong> convey<br />

emotion. Not everyone will do this in the same ways based on factors<br />

such as the personality of the instructor, the age of your learners, <strong>and</strong><br />

the context in which you work; but <strong>for</strong> this educator, this is an<br />

authentic example of “voice” that seeks to promote connection. In<br />

certain contexts, the use of emoticons, gifs, <strong>and</strong> memes might be an<br />

authentic <strong>and</strong> approachable way to build connection.<br />
