This book was published 10 years after Locke’s death. It is the first edition of his collected works and
the earliest to put his name to Two Treatises on Government as well as the letters on Toleration and
The Reasonableness of Christianity.
John Locke (1632 – 1704) was a Fellow of the Royal Society, an English philosopher and a
physician. He has been considered “the most worthy of the indisputably great philosophers”. He
is regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and the Father of Classical
Liberalism. “Locke was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate the
certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge critically when confronted with God and the universe.” His work
contributed significantly to the theories of the mind and knowledge, to empirical science and also to political and
economic philosophy.
The volumes are in folio format, bound in full contemporary brown calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised
