REGIONAL CLUB REPORTS

Northern Ireland Simmental

Cattle Breeders Club

Chairman’s Report by Conrad Fegan

It was a great honour to be elected as chairman of the

Northern Ireland Simmental Breeders Club. I hope to

follow on from previous chairpersons and promote the

breed as best I can alongside the elected committee.

We started the year with the Pedigree Calf Fair held

at Balmoral Showgrounds, Belfast. The judge on the day

was Douglas Barr from Scotland. There was great quality

stock on show with Leslie and Christopher Weatherup

taking the Senior and Reserve Senior Championship with

Lisglass Helena and Lisglass Honey. Taking the Junior

Championship was Adrian Richardson, Maguiresbridge

with Cleenagh Ivy. Reserve Junior was Ballinlare Farm

Isabella bred by Joe Wilson and sons, Newry.

The annual dinner and prizegiving was held on Friday

26th January in the Cohannon Inn, Dungannon and hosted

70 members and their families. We all had a great night

and the winners of the year’s shows and sales collected

their awards. We thanked all our sponsors and members

for their generosity throughout the year.

February saw the first sale of the year with some

Northern Ireland breeders taking the long trip to

Stirling. As always the breeders took their fair share of

rosettes with Harold Stubbs and Alan Burleigh taking the

Intermediate Championship and top price for Northern

Irish bulls of 12,000gns for Camus Harold, bred by Joe

Campbell, Strabane. Robsons of Ballyclare hit five figures

with the 1st prize winning Kilbride Farm Haka making

10,000gns. Kenny Veitch from Lisbellaw, Fermanagh

took 7,000gns for the 1st prize winning Coolcrannel Hero,

bred by Willie Phair, Lisbellaw. Following this was 1st

prize winning Corrick Hamlet bred by Cecil, Neil and Scott

McIlwaine from Newtonstewart. This bull was crowned

2017 Male of the Year, and was the winner of the Bank

of Ireland/Nisa Interbreed Junior Bull Championship.

He realised 6,500gns. Also claiming a red rosette and

6,500gns was Drumagarner Hughes from Michael and

Eamon McCloskey, Kilrea. Two bulls hit the 5,200gn

mark, Richard Rodgers of Portglenone with 5th placed

Hiltonstown Hennessy and Shane and Paul McDonald,

Tempo with 2nd place Coolcran Hercules.

Quality bulls and females were on offer in Dungannon’s

March sale. The pre-show was in the capable hands of

judge Gareth Corrie from Newtownards. Leading the

sale was Scribby Farms Harvey bred by Keith and Andrea

Nelson, Rosslea, selling for 3,300gns. Two lots came under

the hammer at 3,200gns including the Reserve Male and

Reserve Supreme Champion Derrycallaghan Homeringer

bred by Harold Stubbs and Alan Burleigh, Fermanagh,

and Kilbride Farm Hi-Tech bred by Billy Robson and sons

Michael and Norman, Ballyclare. Robsons also took the

Male and Supreme Championship with Kilbride Farm

Hoylake making 3,000gns. Females peaked at 3,000gns for

Adrian Richardson with the Female Champion Cleenagh

Ivy. Leslie and Christopher Weatherup took the Reserve

Female Championship with Lisglass Honeybee which sold

for 2,300gns. Following closely behind at 2,200gns was

Castlemount Modesty 4th from Duncan McDowell’s herd at

Newtownards. The show and sale was kindly sponsored by

Irwin Feeds.
