SIMMENTAL REVIEW 2018

JOHN MOORE

Although not brought up on a farm, I have been interested in

agriculture for as long as I can remember. Both my grandfathers

were farmers, so livestock breeding is in my blood, and even though

I was brought up in a country vicarage I always aspired to own my own

small farm business.

My father established the Omorga herd (Gaelic for Moore) in 1974 with

a heifer from Bertie Watterson, a cow from Alexander Cameron and two

heifers from a very young Bertie Houston in Donegal. The herd has grown

over the years to 40 cows, and we try to breed clean, muscly cattle with

commercial traits. Bulls and heifers are sold at home, but we also enjoy

selling stock at Stirling and the local Club Sales.

I studied Agriculture at Queen’s University Belfast, and now enjoy

working full time for the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise

(CAFRE) in Northern Ireland. I manage an excellent young team of advisers

who help to develop beef and sheep farmers in the province.

I enjoy serving the BSCS Council, and have made good friends in this

forum. I have been lucky enough to have judged our fantastic breed all

over Britain and Ireland, and enjoy meeting new and old friends in this

manner.

In my youth I enjoyed playing rugby, but now just work or farm. I like

travelling when I can and am also quite involved in our local church, and

local Show committee. I am married to Diane and have one 17 year- old

daughter Cara who enjoys cattle as well.
