I
would like to open this report on a rather sombre note.
Our annual AGM was held on 29th April at Tony and
Ann Jukes farm in Kent. It was probably the last occasion
that most of us were in the company of Paull Borlase who
passed away at the end of July. A substantial lunch was
provided by Ann and her merry band of helpers which we
consumed after our meeting.
A memorial service was held at Sacombe in mid-
September followed by a superb lunch provided by Judy
and Bridget at the farm.
In early September, Ann organised a three-day trip
to Southern Ireland. We visited the Raceview and
Clonagh herds and saw tremendous cattle knee deep
in luscious grass which we in the South of England have
been desperately short of this year. Having been fed
and watered at both farms on the Friday it could have
been shades of the Vicar of Dibley where she ate three
Christmas dinners, but luckily, we cancelled the evening
meal at the hotel we were staying at. Accommodation was
provided by the Bloomfield House Hotel owned by John
Connaughton of Bally Bane who also provided the venue
for our Sunday visit. A farm to die for, race horses and
Simmental cattle in an exquisite environment with hardly a
blade of grass out of place.
On the Saturday we attended a show at Strokestown.
Although a trifle damp for most of the day, we thoroughly
enjoyed ourselves and it was a breath of fresh air to see so
many youngsters so enthusiastic about showing.

Our herd competition was judged by Robin Boyd, ably
driven around by Neil Shand. Sixteen herds were inspected
in just over three days with 1000 miles covered, quite a
feat. A big thank you to them both.
