A messageFROM THE CEO- Neil ShandThe first week of 2018 saw the untimely passingof Hector Macaskill following an illness foughtwith courage and dignity. Hector was President ofthe Society when I joined, and guided the organisationthrough a turbulent couple of years with a calm andsteely determination. He is credited with establishing thestability within the organisation that we now have. Thoseof us lucky enough to know him well were fully aware ofhis charisma, his honest determination to succeed and hiscontinued efforts to improve his own herd. The success ofthe two Woodhall sales will ensure that Hector’s breedinglines will remain at the forefront of our breed for manyyears to come. He was a great telephone companion onlate night drives as we discussed the merits of this bulland that bull, and the demise of Glasgow Rangers. A goodfriend lost, but never forgotten.The weather in 2018 was, to say the least, a challenge.The beast from the east provided us with some freezingweather resulting in late turnouts, followed by droughtswhich caused shortage of fodder crops. All this followed onfrom a winter when stocks were used up. It will take at leastone more full season before the forage situation settlesdown, and we can only hope for more seasonal weather andless extremities in the forecast.The prime cattle trade has been affected by the amountof cheaper cow beef becoming available, as producers avoidkeeping empty and unproductive cows through a secondpotentially expensive winter. Spring Sales in 2018 - Stirlingexcluded - were bumpy for all breeds, and last year was notthe year to make major calls based on those trends. Wecontinue to report our sale averages as bulls/females soldthrough the ring, unlike some of our major competitors. TheStirling October sale saw our second highest October saleaverage and a good clearance, with the Mendick Dispersalalso hugely successful.The last five years have seen more dispersals and majorreductions than would have been ideal, and these havea major impact on bull trade. It is a tremendous creditto the breeders that we have continued to hold our ownconsidering the numbers of bull calves both at foot andinside cows that we have sold recently. The success of allthese dispersals and reductions are clear testament to thedemand for the breed.The quality of our cattle at sales continues to be verygood, but we can, and should, always strive to improvefurther. Standing still in terms of quality would lead to usmoving backwards in comparison to other breeds. Therehas been a significant lift in the number of herds beingclassified this year, and it does no harm at all to have anindependent critic cast their eye over your cattle. As a toolfor increasing quality in your herd, classification is one of themost important areas to focus on. In the past 18 months,we have seen top commercial herds paying 15000gns and18000gns for bulls at Stirling; confirmation that quality doespay.Looking ahead to 2019, we may see an outcome to Brexitbutthen again, we may not! The resilience of agriculture andthe need to feed the nation will help to ensure the stabilityof the beef industry in the long term. However, this is out ofour control, and we should expect some small bumps alongthe way until everything settles down.Genomics remain a buzz word in our industry and weare keeping a very close eye on the potential benefitsof DNA analysis and cattle performance. There are stillmisconceptions regarding genomics. Before they can beconsidered reliable, we need far more raw data to becollected- for example weights and scanning information.It is from this information that the genomic database isconstructed.In the next 18 months, we will move offices and stageour 50th anniversary celebrations, two of the biggest singleissues we will have dealt with as a breed office. PROMOTIONALEVENTS 2018SIMMENTAL REVIEW 20182018 was another year packed with promotionalevents. We kicked off in February at Dungannonmarket with the Northern Irish NBA event. Markettemperatures were well into the minuses as the first Beastfrom the East came rolling in, but this didn’t appear toaffect attendance at the event. With enthusiastic supportfrom local club members and some tremendous cattle ondisplay, we were again awarded the best stand competition- a positive start to the year.www.britishsimmental.co.uk019
