REGIONAL CLUB REPORTS
South West Club
Report by Dawn Shapland - Secretary
The heaviest snow for several years, a record-breaking
heatwave and then a storm called Bronagh brought
about rather a quiet year for our Club.
As usual, on the third Monday in January, we had a
Simmental team entered in the area’s Interbreed Quiz.
A slight change to the usual lineup, Adrian Curry, Kath
Edwards, myself and this year’s “secret weapon” Steve
Shapland. With Quizmaster Tony Walker setting the
questions, we eventually finished a highly creditable
second to the young ladies in the British Blues team.
Due to the most significant snowfall in recent years,
the A.G.M was postponed from March 5th. Three weeks
later the clocks had changed to British Summertime and
we were rewarded with magnificent views of our venue,
the Oake Manor Golf Club. Another quiz, (famous farmers)
provided the evening’s entertainment. Victorious were
“The Auctioneers” a team comprising of Clive Roads, Chris
Clapham and David Barker.
At the meeting we all had the opportunity to view
approximately 30 years-worth of Simmental Sale
catalogues, Perth, Stirling, Carlisle, Bristol, Worcester etc,
and copies of a Society publication from 1995 “SIMMENTAL
Its first 25 Years in the United Kingdom”. These items have
all been very generously donated to the Club by Mr and
Mrs David and Christina Mills.
The pre-sale show at Worcester was judged this year by
Craig Hollingsworth (Midhope Herd). He awarded Female
and Overall Champion to Mr Beynon’s splendid cow,
Gwili Gwenan. She sold for 3600 guineas, with her heifer
calf Gwili Jenny, at foot. Richard and Debbie Cumming’s
Cwarre Hanukkah was the Champion Male. Reserve Male
was given to Bosahan Hendra from John and Bridget Olds.
Vendors achieved an excellent clearance with only two
animals not selling through the sales ring!
Thank you to all our sponsors: Mole Valley Farmers,
Shearwell Data, For Farmers, Crediton Milling, ABP
Langport, Torch Farm Vets and the Winford, Lopemede and
Bosahan Herds.

At the Devon County Show in May, there was a lastminute
change of judge to former club Chairman, John
May (Priorton Herd). Female and Overall Champion was a
wonderful cow from Cornwall, the Gummow’s Killiworgie
Grace’s Camelia. Reserve Overall was awarded to our
present Chairman’s heifer, Winford Vogue 11th . Champion
Male was another animal from Cornwall, Skylark Geronimo
owned by Anthony Hart.
