<strong>of</strong> like... backwards modrons."<br />

"So this is a... backwards modron?"<br />

"Backwards modron = 'Nor<strong>do</strong>m?'" The cu<strong>be</strong>'s voice had a metallic, warbling<br />

quality <strong>to</strong> it, as if every word it spoke was jumping <strong>of</strong>f a spring and landing...<br />

well, somewhere else. Its mouth formed a bizarre sideways semi-circle,<br />

which I <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a smile. "Gratitudes! Gratefuls!"<br />

"Uh... I'm sorry?"<br />

"Not sorries. Null sorries. Gratitudes! Indentification <strong>of</strong> self comprosized by<br />

<strong>do</strong>ubtings + mullings + analysis." The cu<strong>be</strong> chrrruped again, and one <strong>of</strong> its<br />

eye blinked with a klik - then after a moment, the other eye kliked, as if it<br />

didn't want <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> left out.<br />

"You're grateful... that I identified you? Aren't you a modron?"<br />

The cu<strong>be</strong>'s features steadied themselves, and its mouth formed a flat line.<br />

"Indemnification <strong>of</strong> this unit (was) compromised. Subject - addressee<br />

indemnified unit as 'Nor<strong>do</strong>m.' Gratitudes tendered for providing Nor<strong>do</strong>m<br />

indemnification."<br />

"It was <strong>not</strong>hing. Really."<br />

Nor<strong>do</strong>m's eyes kliked and blinked once, twice, three times; each time the<br />

black spots in the center <strong>of</strong> his eyes dilated - by the third blink, they were<br />

the size <strong>of</strong> pinheads. "Real-eye-zation reached: Nor<strong>do</strong>m null know name <strong>of</strong><br />

addressee. Indemify yourself."<br />

"You mean 'identify,' right?"<br />

"Affirma<strong>to</strong>ry. Indent-ify, required. <strong>Request</strong>: Identify identity <strong>to</strong> Nor<strong>do</strong>m."<br />

"I <strong>do</strong>n't really have a name, Nor<strong>do</strong>m."<br />

Nor<strong>do</strong>m's eyes widened, the diameter <strong>of</strong> his 'pupils' grew back <strong>to</strong> normal<br />

size. He kliked and blinked once - but the metal shutters that fell across his<br />
