Nanako’s texts 36&6+$*&6$0%&>%'>%*%"6%8&6+%0%*&3"8&$**(%*&D>70&+%>&387#%*5%"6&#$D%-&+%>&456$7"&G3*&*%6&36& concerts, sleepovers, parties and classrooms. <strong>The</strong> texts dealt with concerns familiar to 97(",&G70%"&G7>#8G$8%S&*(5+&3*&'7'(#3>$69S&D>$%"8*+$'S&4>*6I%S&3"8&6+%&'>%**(>%&67& succeed academically (Black 2009). As more time passed and Nanako continued to receive and integrate feedback, there were shifts in her writing. It was not until Nanako received hundreds <strong>of</strong> encouraging reviews that she began to incorporate foreign terms into her fan 456$7"&.g#35H&V;;n1M&/*&76+%>&D3"*&)%,3"&67&>%*'7"8&'7*$6$I%#9S&*+%&)%,3"&67&'>%*%"6&07>%& 7D&6+$*&3*'%56&7D&+%>*%#D&67&>%38%>*M&j%>&D3"&456$7"&)%,3"&67&6(>"&67G3>8*&6+%0%*&3"8&67'$5*& she viewed as closely related to her identity as a young Asian female (Black 2009). Some texts centred on the role <strong>of</strong> women in Chinese and Japanese society; others were based on the history <strong>of</strong> relations between China and Japan (Black 2006). Nanako’s case study (Black 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009) demonstrates that <strong>publishing</strong> fan 456$7"&7"#$"%&7I%>&3&"(0)%>&7D&9%3>*&3##7G*&+%>&67&"%,76$36%&8$DD%>%"6&3*'%56*&7D&+%>&$8%"6$69& in different ways. Who, what, and how she chooses to represent herself changes throughout +%>&D3"&456$7"M&B+%*%&6+$",*&3>%&57"6$",%"6&7"&6+%&D%%8)35H&3"8&'7*$6$I%&$"6%>356$7"*&*+%& +3*&G$6+&76+%>&3"$0%&D3"*&3"8&D3"&456$7"&>%38%>*&3"8&G>$6%>*M&B+>7(,+&*%#D]$8%"6$4536$7"& with the Card Captor Sakura series, its characters, and other fans <strong>of</strong> the anime, Nanako is able to explore her identity in ways that she may not have been able to if she had not G>$66%"&3"8&'()#$*+%8&+%>&3"$0%&D3"&456$7"&7"#$"%M Conclusions B+$*&3>6$5#%&8$*5(**%*&+7G&G>$6$",&3"8&'()#$*+$",&.3"$0%1&D3"&456$7"&7"#$"%S&'3>6$5(#3>#9&67& receptive and interactive fan communities, can affect the ways in which one young woman 57"*6>(56*&3"8&"%,76$36%*&$8%"6$69M&B+>7(,+&+%>&7"#$"%&3"$0%&D3"&456$7"S&[3"3H7&G3*&3)#%& to construct and negotiate a discursively powerful identity for herself as an anime fan, fan author, and Asian female.
