Exclusion criteria: previous treadmill <strong>training</strong>; class C or D exercise risk (ACSM 1998);<br />
cognitive deficits (MMSE < 26 of 30); movement disorders; orthopaedic or gait-influencing<br />

Interventions Intervention: STT (structured speed-dependent treadmill <strong>training</strong>); 30 minutes per day 3<br />
days per week <strong>for</strong> 4 weeks; minimal body weight support (10%) <strong>for</strong> first 3 sessions; speed<br />
was increased progressively to the highest speed at which the patient could walk safely. The<br />
maximum-achieved speed was held <strong>for</strong> 10 seconds followed by a recovery period. Each<br />
time the patient successfully completed 10 seconds of walking at the set speed, the speed<br />
was increased during the next phase by 10%. Treadmill was run at 0% incline<br />
LTT (limited progressive treadmill <strong>training</strong> group); 30 minutes per day 3 days per week<br />
<strong>for</strong> 4 weeks; minimal body weight support <strong>for</strong> first 3 sessions; speed was increased by no<br />
more than 5% of the maximum initial speed each week (20% over 4 weeks); treadmill was<br />
run at 0% incline<br />
Both intervention groups also received conventional physiotherapy 45 minutes/day 2 days/<br />
week <strong>for</strong> 4 weeks (included some gait <strong>training</strong>); total 12 hours of treatment<br />
Control: conventional gait <strong>training</strong> that comprised post neuromuscular facilitation and<br />
Bobath techniques; 30 minutes/day 3 days/week <strong>for</strong> 4 weeks. The control group also<br />
