salary while occupying th<strong>at</strong> position <strong>at</strong> the Central<br />

Conference. It might be interpreted th<strong>at</strong> these Teamster<br />

monies, $225,000, were supplied to the defendants'<br />

families to s<strong>us</strong>tain them during the Government's case.<br />

As can be seen from <strong>this</strong> graph, the defendants'<br />

legal fees were whittled down to a mere two percent of<br />

their <strong>or</strong>iginal costs by Teamster entities bef<strong>or</strong>e reaching<br />

the defendants. No rec<strong>or</strong>d can be found <strong>or</strong> any of the<br />

Teamster <strong>or</strong>ganiz<strong>at</strong>ions questioning the culpability of<br />

the defendants <strong>or</strong> the defendants' ability to repay these<br />

funds, if they were found to be ab<strong>us</strong>ive.<br />

As the graph also ill<strong>us</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>es, one of the five<br />

defendants, Joey Lombardo, was unable to make claims<br />

against the Teamsters <strong>or</strong> receive money as a Teamster<br />

service provider to defray his legal costs. Predictably,<br />

Lombardo's share of the expense costs would <strong>have</strong> been<br />

20 percent <strong>or</strong> $800,000. Instead, Lombardo's costs con-<br />

stituted a mere one percent of $45,000. This again<br />

ill<strong>us</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> the elab<strong>or</strong><strong>at</strong>e $4 million defense was<br />

constructed to be paid f<strong>or</strong> by the victim, while radically<br />

minimizing the liability of the acc<strong>us</strong>ed.<br />

Several years after the trial of United St<strong>at</strong>es<br />

vs. D<strong>or</strong>fmap, the Central St<strong>at</strong>es Benefit Funds agreed to<br />
