Presentation of the Company:
The UMR EPOC (Oceanic Environments and
Palaeoenvironments) is a Mixed Research Unit (Unité Mixte
de Recherche, UMR 5805) shared between two
institutions : Bordeaux-1 university and CNRS (Centre
National de la Recherche Scientifique)
Its aims are:
-Fundamental international research in the domains of
littoral oceanography, palaeoclimatology, and
environments of the continent-ocean interface
-Research training and development in partnership with
the University Bordeaux 1 and the EPHE
-Observation and data collection on hydrodynamics and
morphological dynamics of the littoral zone through the
activities of the Service d'Observation du Milieu Littoral
EPOC is a laboratory of 150 to 160 people, among them
60 researchers and teacher-researchers
40 to 50 doctoral students, post-docs, ATER and monitors
50 technical staff : engineers, administrators, technicians
and service staff

Observation Services
Cross-cutting observation activities are
undertaken under the wing of the UMR EPOC,
with the aims of gathering evidence for longterm
fluctuations in littoral ecosystems and the
supporting research programs, following two
main avenues.
The first avenue is defined primarily by the
local activities of SOMLIT (Service
d'Observation en Milieu Littoral), authorised by
INSU, and by complementary observation
activities. In addition to the body of
parameters measured through SOMLIT
(essentially physico-chemical in nature), a
range of other, notably biological, data are
reguarly collected.
The second avenue aims at regular data
acquisition on hydrodynamic factors such as
swell and on the morphological dynamics of
the littoral. These data are gathered in support
of research programs on coastline dynamics,
for which the UMR EPOC aims to develop
predictive integrated models coupling
hydrodynamic and morphodynamic
(morphology of intertidal and subtidal zones)
models.
Shared services are divided between the two
geographic sites of the laboratory and are
directed locally. They provide administrative,

and logistical support for the thematic teams
and their research.
