Remote Sensing of Environment Laboratory was
established to pursue higher education and research of
remote sensing techniques. We are oriented towards
evaluation of new techniques and methods and their
application in environmental studies (physical geography),
protection of environment and human (social and
economic geography). Our activities are aimed at analysis
of satellite and aerial images and integrated field studies.
The main fields of research include studies of land use and
environmental changes and analyses of environmental
structure. The most important studies comprise:
• Analysis of vegetation in mountain environment using
hyperspectral data,
• Analysis of land use in chosen catchments,
• Analysis of urban structure in Warsaw, Lodz, Plock and
Bialystok,
• Spatial changes of functional structure of the chosen
cities located in the north-east part of Poland (1969-
1989),
• Changes of water relations in the middle Narew valley
(1968-1988),
• Geographical conditioning of differentiation of satellite
image of Poland and its division into photomorphic
units,
• Environmental management of industrial sites in Silesia
region,
• Analysis of traffic in Warsaw,
• Land use mapping within CORINE LAND COVER
programme,
We also focus on remote sensing application for analysis of
structure of mountain environments, application of
integrated GIS and remote sensing methods for evaluation
of large scale geomorphological maps, geoinformation
systems for environmental management. The Laboratory
implements a broad teaching programme at geographical
and environmental studies. The basic remote sensing
methods courses and lectures are provided for all the
students of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies
and of Inter-Faculty Studies Programme in Environmental
Protection. Advanced courses are intended for students
evaluating their diploma projects in the following
specialisations: Remote Sensing of Environment,
Geoecology, Geomorphology and Cartography.
