The SoDa service originates from
the EU-funded project SoDa
"Integration and exploitation of
networked Solar radiation
Databases for environment
monitoring" (IST-1999-12245),
completed in 2002. Since then,
an operational service was set up
with an increasing number of
customers, most of them being
companies and consultants -more
than 30 000 in 2008. The SoDa
Service was chosen as an early
achievement in 2007 within
GEOSS and was presented
within the first 100 steps towards
GEOSS and to the Ministerial
Summit in Cape Town in
November 2007.
DataForWind was creating in
2003 under the auspices of the
European Space Agency. It
offers data and applications in
wind energy. Its use is increasing
from year to year: they satisfy
tens of thousands of requests per
year.

Armines
Presentation of the Company:
ARMINES is a non-for-profit research organisation funded in
1967. The relationship of Armines with the engineering and
management schools is governed by agreements, under the
supervision of the Ministries of Industry, Defence and
Equipment. In line with the nature of partnership research, the
operational unit is the joint research centre managed jointly by
Armines and its partner engineering schools where each body
provides personnel, investment and operating resources according
to the volume of contractual activity. With a turnover of €42
million (2007), Armines is the leading French Research and
Technology Organisation.
The Centre of Energy and Processes (CEP) is a joint laboratory
of Mines ParisTech and Armines, of about 160 persons studying
various forms of energy, including use of renewable energies.
Key Products and Services
The CEP is working on the assessment of the solar radiation
available at ground for engineering purposes by the means of
satellite imagery since 1978 and in wind energy since 1998. It has
created several databases containing solar radiation values and
other meteorological and geographical parameters of interest in
sun and wind energy (atmosphere optics, orography, ground
albedo, land cover, air temperature, relative humidity), calling
upon advanced applied mathematics techniques. These databases
are continuously updated with the continuous support of the
European Space Agency (ESA) and Eumetsat among others. An
expertise has been gained in establishing World-Wide Web
servers since 1993. These servers supply applications and
databases relating to solar radiation, wind energy and industrial
systems.
The services SoDa (www.soda-is.com) and DataForWind
(www.dataforwind.com) are precursors of the potential of
GEOSS and GMES. By connecting data suppliers and
applications providers, they act as brokers and offer a high
quality answer to customers in the field of solar and wind energy.
The CEP is hosting, managing and developing the middleware
and the Web sites; it acts as the technical arm for the company
Transvalor which manages the administrative, financial and legal
aspects of the sales of databases of the CEP.
