Palabras clave: cerdos, levadura torula, harina de soya, digestibilidad, nitrógeno, energía Título corto: Digestibilidad de dietas de levadura torula y sirope de refinería en cerdos INTRODUCTION Syrup off has been revealed as a valuable energy feed for pigs, either from the point of view of its feeding value (Pérez et al 1984; Ly 2000) or nutritive characteristics (Ly and Castillo 1983; Ly 2000) in simple diets formulated with torula yeast as the only protein source. On the other hand, torula yeast has been studied in several experiments conducted with pigs fed different types of sugar cane molasses (see for example, Ly et al 1984; Maylin 1985; Maylín et al 1988; Díaz et al 1990). However, very few comparisons if any, have been conducted between torula yeast and soybean meal as the major or even only source of protein for pigs. The objective of the present note is to report several digestibility indices in pigs fed syrup off as the only energy source, and torula yeast or soybean meal as protein source. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 12 YLxD castrate male pigs of 35 kg live weight were alloted at random into two treatments to compare digestibility indices of diets containing either soybean meal or torula yeast as the only source of protein and syrup off (table 1). Syrup off was from a Cuban factory and contained DM, 67.3%, and in dry basis: ash, 0.7; N, 0.1% respectively; gross energy, 16.6 kjoule/g. Torula yeast was of Cuban origin too and contained: ash, 9.9; N, 7.7% in dry basis respectively and gross energy, 20.1 kjoule/g. The animals were individually penned in an open stable without walls, provided with portable throughs and drinking nipples Feed was offered at a rate of 0.10 kg DM/kg 0.75 in two aequal rations given at 9:00 and 15:00 hours. The animals were adapted to the diets during two weeks followed by a faecal collection by grab sampling at 8:00 and 14:00 hours, and thereafter mixed to obtain a composite sample per pig. 28
