TECHNKAL INFO
- RUTH mns under DOS. RUTH does not run under Windows.
RAM reqnirernancs are unknown as yet. Disk requirements: tcm-
porary files need a Iot of disk space.
- RUTH is writren in Turbo PascaI 6.0 (bul not OOP - object
oriented programming). The program also uses u out in es from
Borland's Database Toolbox 4.0 and Turba Power's Turbo Pro-
ressional 5.1 1.
- Interface: menns, windows, nrrow keys; no mouse.
CHARA CTERTSTTCS AND LIMITATIONS
RUTH was designed with the fotlowing characteristics and limitations:
- Conc~rdance~based interface: The program displays the text as
a KWIC concordance ordered by word and right context (see any
illusmation). In such a concordance, identica1 or simiIar words
and expressions will be grouped together. The program is therefore
suited to cncode words and expressions, as long as the occumnces
most often should be coded the same way. Encoding "Iong"
clcments like scntences rnay be difficult or impossible.
The KWIC is scrollable both veiticalIy and horizontally (horizontally
Iimited to about 250 charactcrs on either side of khc kcyword).
(When a code is added, deleted or altered, all occurrences in the
display are updated.)
Cotnrnent: The des~gn of rhe program, files and internal srructures
does not exclude furrher enhancements in the form of an additional
word processor sype interface. Such an inteiface might for example
ollow longer elernenu to be encoded.
- Static text: The text is supposed te be static. No changec can
be made to the text iltself. Only codes kan be added, deleted or
altered.
Cornment: This is a more fundamental characrerisric qf rhe pro-
gram. For the program lo be able ro handle a dynamic rexr in
addition to codes, large parfs of the program as well as data
nrucrures and files would liave la be redesigned.
- Redefinable code strncture: The stniclwe of the codes is read
from 3 uscr-defined file.
(Different code sek rnay be uscd for input, screen and output.
The program may thererorc also be used for simple code con-
versions.)
