code will be among the suggestions. Se aiso code pick lists.
- Code pick lists: During the coding process the program rernembers
the codes set by the user. The program maintains two lists, one
for area codes and one for point codes. The user rnay select
codes From these lists. See iilustration 7.
Commeni: The pick lisi mechanism is fairly primitive. Among
possible enhancemenrs are: The possibilio of editing the Iisrs, ro
save lists, to access previausly saved iists. to occess user-defined
lists, ro handle lisis of unlimired Iengths, etc.
- Not limited to bierarchical encoding: The program allows over-
lapping non-hierarchical codes.
- Tightlly nested or aeighbonring codes: The program allows the
same area to be encodcd with several tightly nested codes, or
the same point with severd codes.
- Input may be partialIy encoded: The program accepts input
texts hat are already coded. This allows a text to be encoded
in more han one pass.
It rnay also be used b speed up the proccss of encoding, by
cambining an uacoded and a coded text, If the same elements
occut in the two files, the pregram may suggesi codes hund in
the coded part of tiie text (see suggested codcs). Specially prepared
coded texts rnight aiso be considered, e.g. lists of encadcd words
and expressions, whose sole purpose ase to provide codes to be
suggested by the program. Such lists might be crindensed versions
of coded texts. The program cannot prepare such lists, however.
Commenr: This mighr be used ro give the program a simple form
of learning capabilily. Enhancements may be necessary ro provide
the required funnionality. e.g. the possibility of moking parts of
rhe input rex1 staric (so rhot the coded text parts cannot be
al tered).
- Input syntax check: The proBarn checks the input for syntax
etrors (partially encoded input text).
Cornmenr: Not good enouglt now: sbw, not robust and does not
recover from errors of any severity. Coding of erroneous input
sliodd probably nor be allowcd, but errors should nor abort ~hc
synfar checking proeess. The process mighr be spceded up wlilt
a /inile state automalon.
- Seve and restore: The result (the encaded text) may at any lime
be saved to files and restored from thcse files. (These files are
not text files like the ordinary output file.)
