be useful. According to Russell (2003), the first step for the prevention of
risk behaviour and intervention for sexual minority adolescent populations is
directing fundamental attention to same-sex sexuality in intervention efforts.
To achieve this, the education of teachers and health personnel must include
a focus on sexual minority issues. Furthermore, studies of prevention efforts
related to sexual risk behaviour, suggest that strategies involving health care
access and peer support for gay and lesbian youth promote self-esteem
(Wright, Gonzalez, Werner, Laughner, & Wallace, 1998). Thus, prevention
and intervention efforts should target student populations, curriculum and
educators as well as gay and lesbian youth.
