xvABSTRACTThis dissertation has as an objective to <strong>de</strong>monstrate the application ofindustrial ecology concepts in the production of an eco-composite materialbased on the residues of wood industries. In or<strong>de</strong>r to have these ecologicalmaterial concepts, such as: eco-efficiency, resources circulation, eco-<strong>de</strong>signand life cycle analysis have been used. These concepts are part of a biggerconcept – ecological industrial – that aims efficient ways to preventenvironment from pollution.The object of this research was the residue ofwood waste and “maravalha”. These residues came from a company of woodlogs <strong>de</strong>nominated as a Productive Process I. The residue was classified andrecycled as a refill of resin of unsaturated polyester, used in a secondcompany, specialized in reinforced plastic, <strong>de</strong>nominated as ProductiveProcess II. This relation between productive processes through the use ofrecycled wood waste configured as practical application of industrial ecology.The mixture of wood waste and resin of polyester produced a compositematerial <strong>de</strong>nominated WPC – wood plastic composite – with 14 differentfeatures, formulated according to particles size distribution and percentage of10 and 20% These features were moun<strong>de</strong>d in specimens according to couldpress moulding process, after that tested in 3 studies following the NBR: thewater absorption study, based on the NBR 8514, the hardness study ShoreD., based on the NBR 7456 and the tensile study at 3 ways based on theNBR 7447. The results showed that the composite allows the utilization ofabout 95% of wood waste in filler of polyester resin. The studies also showedthat the water absorption is much lower than solid wood absorption, the woodwaste hasn´t <strong>de</strong>creased much the hardness of polyester matrix, thatincreased the resistance of tensile of the matrix and it increased its rigidity,as well. Despite of the analyses of the technical – economical viability werenecessary, we came to the conclusion that the use of wood waste recycled isan eco-efficient way for the reduction of solid industrial residues, and for theobtaining of filler and reinforcement for plastic resins, contributing to thereduction of the amount of wood industries residue.KEY WORDS:<strong>Industrial</strong> ecology, wood waste, recycling, eco - composite
