The hull has been built ty A/S. Svendborg Skibs-vaerft<br />
under subcontract from Messrs. Burmeister<br />
and w*ain, Copenhagen, who received the main contract<br />
from Dampskibsselskabet paa Bornholm af 1866, and<br />
who are fitting out the ship.<br />
Th.e "Østersøen" Is primilary intended for the<br />
owner's summer sailings to Sweden, vis. Allinge to :<br />
Simrishamn and Rønne to Ystad.<br />
The vessel has a raked soft-nose stem and cruiser<br />
stern, and the hull is strengthened for navigating<br />
in ice. There are four decks, two of which<br />
are continuous. Accomodation is arranged for <strong>50</strong>0 \<br />
passengers, the seating capacity is 135 persons in \<br />
the saloon, 54 in the restaurant, 31 in the smoking,<br />
room and <strong>50</strong> in the verandah saloon. Two-berth, three<br />
berth, and four-berth cabins, for 48 passengers, ;<br />
are provided on the main and upper decks, aft. Ae- '<br />
comodation for the deck and the engine-room officers,<br />
cabin attendants and crew is situated in the<br />
tween decks forward of the engine-room, and on the<br />
main deck forward. Special provision is made for .<br />
the carriage of automobiles. The automobile deck j<br />
extends for practically the whole length of the<br />
vessel, and has space for about 24 automobiles and ,<br />
10 motor-cycles. To facilitate loading and dischar-;<br />
ging, large side ports are arranged, and there is<br />
also a tumtable on the car deck. The life-saving ;<br />
equipment includes four lifeboats and the required !<br />
number of life-rafts. The boat winches, anchor winch<br />
and capstan are electrically operated, and the ;<br />
steering gear is of the electro-hydraulic type.<br />
The propelling machinery, constructed by Messrs.|<br />
Burmeister and v/ain, consists of a B. & W., singleacting,<br />
two-stroke cycle, eight-rcylinder Diesel engine<br />
developing 2.000 IHP., at 290 r.p.m.<br />
