Innovative Lösungsansätze
Innovative solutions
Far less technologically mature is a novel approach for microbial
production of so-called “electrofuels”. This approach takes ad vantage
of the capability of certain microbes to utilise electric energy
for the formation of reduced carbon compounds from CO 2
. The reduced
molecules are subsequently excreted into the surrounding
medium. The reaction can proceed via a direct and an indir ect pathway.
In case of the latter, the electron uptake occurs not through
the microbes, but via electrolytic reduction of inorganic compounds
at the electrode, forming hydrogen in the illustrated example. Certain
microorganisms are capable of metabolising such reduction
products and channel the thus gained energy into the synthesis of
hydrocarbon compounds from CO 2
and H 2
O. Even though, at the
current stage of research, these reduced compounds are not yet
suitable as blendstock for fuels, future devel opments might enable
an electrically driven direct microbial jet fuel production.
At Bauhaus Luftfahrt, the potential of these and other technologies
is evaluated in detail with a special focus on life-cycle and
future technology analysis. The latter is based on the underlying
technologies, physical and chemical principles as well as a comprehensive
set of criteria.
