EvALUati o n
evaluation der hfg durch den
WiSSenSchaftSrat 2007
Auf Wunsch des Ministeriums für Wissen-
schaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württem-
berg hat der Wissenschaftsrat die HfG Karlsru-
he im Frühjahr 2007 evaluiert. Die Evaluation
diente dem Zweck, Konzeption, Leistungsfähig-
keit und Zukunftsperspektiven der Hochschu-
le von einem unabhängigen Expertengremium
bewerten zu lassen. Die mit der HfG befasste
Arbeitsgruppe wurde vom Vorsitzenden des
Wissenschaftsrats, Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschnei-
der, geleitet. Nachdem die HfG in einem um-
fangreichen Fragebogen Bericht erstattet hatte,
besuchte die Arbeitsgruppe die Hochschule
am 8. und 9. Mai 2007, um sich in ausführli-
chen Gesprächen mit dem Rektorat, der Ver-
waltung, den Professoren und Mitarbeitern
sowie den Studierenden ein abschließendes
Urteil zu bilden. Nach einer weiteren Bera-
tung und einer Anhörung des Landes Baden-
Württemberg am 16. November 2007 verab-
schiedete der Wissenschaftsrat am 25. Januar
systems in Deutschland geworden. (Bericht des
EvALUati o n
evaluation of the hfg By the WiSSenSchaftSrat, the german Science
and humanitieS council, in 2007
Upon request of the State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, Baden-Württemberg, the
Wissenschaftsrat evaluated the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in spring 2007. This
evaluation was conducted so that an independent body of experts could evaluate the purpose,
conception, capacity, and future prospects of the university. The Chairman of the Science and
Humanities Council, Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider, led the working group that dealt with the
HfG. Once the HfG had completed a comprehensive questionnaire to give its report, the working
group visited the university on 8 and 9 May 2007, to base its final assessment on extensive talks
with the Rector’s Office, administration, professors and other employees, as well as students.
Upon further consultation and a hearing of the German State of Baden-Württemberg on 16 No-
vember 2007, the Wissenschaftsrat published a 99-page statement on 25 January 2008. The fol-
lowing key statements have been taken from this document.
The evaluation, based mainly on the results of the working group’s assessment report, showed
overall that the HfG [Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design] has not only followed the recom-
mendations of the Science and Humanities Council, but has even exceeded them in its imple-
mentation. As a result, the university has effectively used its forming years to develop into a
well-established and recognized institution of arts and design. Not only does it fulfill its tasks
outstandingly, but due to its specific range of subjects, its structure with respect to courses of
study and staff, and its extraordinarily cooperative atmosphere, it has also significantly en-
riched the university landscape in Germany (see report of the Wissenschaftsrat, p. 11).
Starting with the founding objectives of the HfG Karlsruhe, and building on the traditions of uni-
versities of applied arts as well as – in an adjusted way – those of universities of fine arts, the
HfG has seized upon many innovative ideas in recent years and developed them further. It has
also taken the opportunity to create its own new paths, in a very specific way: it has success-
fully managed to integrate digital technology into the methods and procedures of art, to apply
it creatively and to make it an object of research and development. Since its founding, the HfG
has continuously pursued its programmatic approach (closely linked to the aesthetic possibili-
ties of design) of exploring many areas of life, making suggestions as to their continued devel-
opment, and then implementing this in a number of diverse activities. This created a sense of
community among the staff and those affiliated with the university – which was most certainly
intended when the university was founded, but in reality is rarely observed anywhere in this in-
tensity. Everyone feels highly committed to unflagging collaboration on the synthesis of design,
media, theory, and – last but not least – social competency.
