Bei einem hoch dotiertem Wettbewerb, dem
Prix Emile Hermés / Paris 2008, ausgeschrieben
für Designer bis 35 Jahren aus dem Europä-
ischen Raum, wurde ein studentischer Beitrag
des Fachbereichs Produktdesign als einer der
drei Finalisten für das große Finale gekürt. In
der Ländergruppe Deutschland / Österreich /
Tschechien konnte sich diese auffällig schlich-
te, intelligente Produktidee gegen eine große
Konkurrenz durchsetzen.
duktvarianten oder Adaptionen bereits be-
kannter Kollektionen geht.
Solche ersten Erfahrungen mit Verhaltensmaß-
nahmen und Reflexionen im Zentrum einer be-
deutenden wirtschaftlichen Produktionsstätte
sind Wertschöpfungen für jedes studentische
Projekt im Rahmen eines Hochschullehrange-
botes.
Mit »IKEA Hacks« und einem weiteren Indu-
strieprojekt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem däni-
schen Designunternehmen Stelton aus Kopen-
hagen beschäftigten sich zwei Lehrveranstal-
tungen im WS 07/08 bzw. SS 08, die einerseits
das gigantische Massenangebot eines schwedi-
schen Direktanbieters unter die Lupe nahmen
– sowohl im ironisierenden Kontext als auch
im Sinne einer »Produktpiraterie der kreativen
Art« – und andererseits das dänische Vorzeige-
unternehmen Stelton auf der Suche nach einem
neuen Produktsegment unterstützen sollten.
Beide Veranstaltungen zeigten partiell Ansät-
ze, wie einem wachsenden Mainstream-Verhal-
ten in unserer Konsumwelt durch komplexere
Recherche und Experimente entgegen gewirkt
werden kann.
Nicht unerwähnt bleiben sollte, dass bei der
diesjährigen Stipendienvergabe der Gesell-
schaft zur Förderung der Kunst- und Medien-
technologie drei der begehrten Jahresstipen-
dien an Studierende des Fachbereichs Pro-
duktdesign vergeben wurden.
Anerkennungen, besonders wenn sie im Sinne
der Hochschule auf einem hohen fachlichen
Niveau ausgesprochen werden, fördern das Be-
wusstsein für vergleichende Qualitäten unter
den Studierenden und schaffen darüber hin-
aus den Geförderten finanzielle Freiräume.
state Of mind
At a highly endowed competition, the Prix Emile Heremés / Paris 2008, open for European design-
ers up to 35 years of age, a contribution from one of the students of the Department of Product
Design was selected as one of three finalists for the grand finale. In the group of countries, Ger-
many / Austria / Czech Republic, this strikingly straightforward, intelligent product idea came
out on top against strong competition.
This once again demonstrated the impact of the freedom of project-oriented teaching at a univer-
sity, and of an open approach to ideas, research, materials, and technologies.
The student project “Simple Light”, from the spring semester 2007, in cooperation with the WMF
AG, was continued. A selection of revised designs was presented to the board of the company,
who awarded the contract for the further design of the WMF Collection 2009 to student Joa Her-
renknecht. This shows implementing students’ prototypes in the company’s model workshops to
be a litmus test, especially when it comes to realizing innovative product ideas, and not just
product variations or adaptations of known collections.
Such first experience with conduct and reflection at the center of an important industrial produc-
tion facility are of utmost value for any student project offered within a university curriculum.
“IKEA Hacks”, as well as another industry project in cooperation with the Copenhagen-based
Danish design company Stelton, were the focus of two classes – one in the fall semester 2007/08
and one in the spring semester 2008. They not only closely examined the gigantic mass offer of
a Swedish direct seller – as much treating it with irony as looking at it from the angle of “crea-
tive product piracy” – but were also to support the Danish showpiece company Stelton in their
search for a new product segment.
Both classes partly showed how a growing mainstream behavior in our consumption-dominated
world can be counteracted by more complex research and experiments.
Worth mentioning is also that, at this year’s scholarship award ceremony of the Association for
the Promotion of Art and Media Technology, three of the highly competitive annual scholarships
were awarded to students of the Department of Product Design.
Recognition, particularly when in it is given at a high level of expertise in accordance with the
spirit of the university, raises the awareness of comparative qualities amongst the students; in ad-
dition, it provides a degree of financial independence and freedom to the scholarship recipient.
