SPOTLIGHT
AFTER ALMOST A FULL YEAR OF GET-
TING CONSTANT REJECTIONS FROM
FILM FESTIVALS TO SCREEN TALA’VISION,
WE GOT OUR PREMIER OPPORTUNITY AT
MAX OPHÜLS FILM FESTIVAL (MOP). MIXED
FEELINGS OVERCAME US, IT WAS HARD TO
STOMACH HAVING TO SCREEN OUR FILM IN
AN ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL EDITION (DUE TO
THE PANDEMIC), ESPECIALLY AFTER THREE
LONG YEARS OF MAKING IT. BUT ON THE
OTHER HAND, WE WERE EXTREMELY HAPPY
TO FINALLY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO
SEND OUR BABY OUT INTO THE WORLD.
At MOP the film won the jury and the audience awards,
which triggered its unexpected journey to many national
and international film festivals. It felt surreal at the
beginning, it was more than any of us had expected this
film would achieve. Festival after festival, award after
award, audiences and juries alike fell in love with the
story of little Tala, a small child whose sole aspiration
was to live a somewhat normal childhood in extreme
circumstances. The film turned many heads in Germany,
yet it was still lacking a push on the international stage.
A while later, Filmakademie BW chose TALA’VISION
as its official submission for the Student Oscars competition.
But knowing that the school had already won a Student
Oscar the year before, it felt that chances were slim
for the same scenario to repeat itself.
