1980 – 1990<br />
Prof. Albrecht Ade establishes an animation class at the<br />
Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.<br />
1982<br />
The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film<br />
(ITFS) is founded.<br />
1991<br />
<strong>Filmakademie</strong> <strong>Baden</strong>-Wuerttemberg (FABW) is founded<br />
in Ludwigsburg with animation/CGI as an essential part<br />
of the educational provision.<br />
1994<br />
The first German Film and Media Exchange (FMX) takes<br />
place in Stuttgart.<br />
2002<br />
Prof. Thomas Haegele becomes the founding director<br />
of the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital<br />
Postproduction at FABW, with the study areas Animation,<br />
Visual Effects, Content Creation and the newly<br />
founded Technical Directing programme. Since then, the<br />
institute has been responsible for training the <strong>Filmakademie</strong>’s<br />
animation and effects students and for the digital<br />
postproduction of student projects at FABW. The German<br />
Film and Media Exchange is renamed FMX, which becomes<br />
an international event organised by the institute.<br />
The Research and Development department, led by Prof.<br />
Volker Helzle, is founded at the institute.<br />
2003<br />
The short film ROCKS (DAS RAD, Heidi Wittlinger,<br />
Chris Stenner, Arvid Uibel) is nominated for an Academy<br />
Award in the Best Animated Short category.<br />
2008<br />
The Interactive Media field of study, established by Inga<br />
von Staden, is integrated into the institute, building a<br />
bridge between the institute and the other departments<br />
of the <strong>Filmakademie</strong>. The study specialisation Animation/Effects<br />
Producing is founded. The first edition of<br />
the EU-funded programme Animation Sans Frontières<br />
takes place, a collaborative project between the Animationsinstitut,<br />
the Animation Workshop in Viborg, GOBE-<br />
LINS l’école de l’image in Paris and the Moholy-Nagy<br />
University of Art and Design in Budapest.<br />
2009<br />
The Animationsinstitut becomes part of the newly<br />
founded Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart<br />
AMCRS, a network initiated by the MFG <strong>Baden</strong>-<br />
<strong>Württemberg</strong>, with members from the animation,<br />
games, VFX and other media sectors, as well as universities<br />
and academies.<br />
2015<br />
Prof. Andreas Hykade becomes head of the Animationsinstitut.<br />
The subject of Intellectual Property is integrated<br />
into the institute’s curriculum.<br />
2020<br />
The financing of the strategy paper «<strong>Filmakademie</strong><br />
2030» allows the Animationsinstitut to establish the specialisation<br />
Character Animation and to expand its international<br />
activities.<br />

Since 1992, the Animationsinstitut’s productions have received<br />
more than 1.000 international awards, making it<br />
one of the most renowned institutes of its kind in the<br />
world. In the summer of 20<strong>22</strong>, the Animationsinstitut<br />
celebrates its 20th anniversary.<br />
