A very distinct species in its coriaceous closely netted<br />

leaves.<br />

Terminthodia, gen. nov.<br />

A shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, unifoliate,<br />

articulate on <strong>the</strong> petiole, glandular, subcoriaceous, obovate,<br />

obtuse. Flowers in axillary corymbs, small, green; calyx<br />

4-lobed, lobes rounded. Petals 4, triangular; disc large,<br />

4-angled; gland dotted. Stamens 4; iilaments, subulate, short;<br />

an<strong>the</strong>rs small. Ovary 4-lobed, protruding from <strong>the</strong> disc.<br />

Style central; stigma small, capitate. Ripe carpels i to 3<br />

developed, boat-shaped, dehiscing along <strong>the</strong> inner edge. Seeds<br />

two in each carpel, small, flattened and winged, pale brown,<br />

exalbuminous.<br />

18. Terminthodia viridiflora, n. sp.<br />

A bush 3 or 4 feet tall, occasionally developing into a<br />

treelet about 15 feet or more tall; bark wrinkled, dark.<br />

Leaves alternate, crowded at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> branches, unifoliate,<br />

subcoriaceous, bright green, aromatic, obovate, with a rounded<br />

entire or retuse apex, or shortly acutely acuminate, nerves<br />

about five or six pairs, faintly visible above, elevate beneath,<br />

inarching within <strong>the</strong> margin, paler beneath, and pr<strong>of</strong>usely<br />

gland-dotted, 2 to 3 inches long, ij to 2 inches wide; petiole<br />

^ inch long, articulate with <strong>the</strong> leaf. Flowers in small pubescent<br />

panicles shorter than <strong>the</strong> leaves, in <strong>the</strong> upper axils,<br />

panicles J inch across on a peduncle i^ inch long. Bracts<br />

small, one-tenth inch long, lanceolate-ovate, acute. Sepals 4,<br />

rounded, imbricate, pubescent, green. Petals longer, 4,<br />

triangular acute, spreading, glabrous, I inch long, darker green.<br />

Disc large, 4-angled, flat, gland-dotted. Stamens 4, alternate<br />

with <strong>the</strong> petals and nearly as long; filaments thick, subulate.<br />

An<strong>the</strong>rs very small. Ovary protruding from <strong>the</strong> disc, 4-lobed.<br />

Style central. Stigma very small, cocci i to 3 usually developed,<br />

Common on <strong>the</strong> Padang in rocky places. The leaves<br />

have a strong turpentine odour when crushed.<br />

This plant is allied to <strong>the</strong> genus Evodia, but differs in its<br />

alternate leaves, large square flat disc, and its thin-winged flat<br />

seed. There is a distinct line between <strong>the</strong> lamina <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaf
