83. PsYCHOTRiA CONDENSA, King & Gamble. Small<br />

compact shrub, epiphytic, with close-set, coriaceous, lanceo-<br />

. late-acuminate leaves with slightly narrowed base, i inch long<br />

by half an inch wide, glabrous, shining above, with <strong>the</strong> nerves<br />

almost invisible ; petiole -^q inch long. Flowers in short dense<br />

cymes, shorter than <strong>the</strong> leaves, ^^ inch long. Calyx shallow,<br />

with 5 very short teeth, glabrous. Corolla thick, tubular,<br />

scurfy outside, <strong>the</strong> lobes oblong-obtuse, not half as long as <strong>the</strong><br />

tube, inside white, woolly round <strong>the</strong> stamens, glabrous above<br />

and below. Stamens with short filaments, shorter than <strong>the</strong><br />

oblong-obtuse, ra<strong>the</strong>r large an<strong>the</strong>rs. Style long, slender,<br />

glabrous, bifid at <strong>the</strong> tip. Fruit nearly a quarter <strong>of</strong> an inch<br />

long, oblong, very obscurely ribbed.<br />

On Gunong Tahan to <strong>the</strong> summit, 7,186 feet elevation.<br />

Distribution. Perak and Gunong Berumbun near Telom.<br />

A single flowering specimen also got on <strong>the</strong> Padang differs<br />

in <strong>the</strong> thinner leaves in remoter pairs and <strong>the</strong> flowers just twice<br />

as large. A very little-known plant, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> flowers have<br />

never been adequately described.<br />

CAMPANULACE^.<br />

*84. Pentaphragma grandis, Ridl. op. cit. p. 312.<br />

Abundant from Wray's Camp to <strong>the</strong> Padang in wet shady<br />

spots. Endemic. The petals are oblong and retuse, yellowish<br />

white ; <strong>the</strong> tube turns purplish within before wi<strong>the</strong>ring, as it<br />

does in P. Ridleyi, King.<br />

VACCINIACEiE.<br />

85. Yxcci'^iuu ScoKYECumu, King & Gamble. A shrub<br />

with rose-pink flowers. On <strong>the</strong> ridge by Bukit Bandera and<br />

on <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> Gunong Tahan, altitude 7,186 feet. It occurs<br />

also in Perak at high elevations. Vaccinium buxifolium, Hook,<br />

fil., <strong>of</strong> Kinabalu, is closely allied to this plant; but <strong>the</strong> leaves<br />

<strong>of</strong> V. Scortechinii are rounder and distinctly gland-dotted<br />

beneath, and <strong>the</strong> flowers are pubescent.<br />

A common shrub on <strong>the</strong> Padang, in fruit only.<br />

Distribution. Perak and Java.<br />

87. Vaccinium Kunstleri, King & Gamble. A shrub in<br />

fruit, Gunong Tahan. Not epiphytic here.<br />

Distribution. Perak.<br />

*88. Vaccinium pubicarpum, Ridl. op. cit. p. 313. A<br />

large branching shrub or treelet, very common on <strong>the</strong> streambanks<br />

in <strong>the</strong> woods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Padang. Also collected on K'luang<br />

Terbang by Barnes.<br />

*89. Vaccinium longibracteatum, Ridl. op. cit. p. 313;<br />

antea, p. 49. A large bush common on <strong>the</strong> ridges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> track<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Padang. The original specimens were only in fruit,<br />

but I got flowers on this occasion and also received a flowering<br />

specimen from Gunong Ulu Kali, Selangor.
