103. DiDYMOCARPUS MODESTA, Sp. IIOV.<br />

Stem slender or moderately stout ; woody, unbranched,<br />

14 cm. tall, appressed, hairy. Leaves opposite in equal pairs,<br />

lanceolate, acuminate at both ends ; entire, thin, glabrous<br />

except <strong>the</strong> edges and nerves beneath, which are hairy, nerves<br />

4 pairs ascending, 7 cm. long, 2.2 cm. wide, petiole .5 mm.<br />

long. Flowers solitary, axillary, usually in <strong>the</strong> uppermost axil,<br />

peduncle 5.5 cm. long, hairy. Bracts narrow, setaceous,<br />

hairy, short. Calyx-lobes setaceous, deep purple, 2 mm.<br />

long. Corolla tube narrowed at <strong>the</strong> base, gradually dilated<br />

upwards, curved, sparingly hairy, lobes oblong, rounded half<br />

as long. Stamens 2, included filaments from near <strong>the</strong> base.<br />

From 3,000 to 5,500 feet elevation, var. b, minor. Leaves 5.5<br />

cm. long, 1.5 cm. wide, peduncle 7 mm., much shorter than <strong>the</strong><br />

leaves. Corolla i cm. long. At 3,500 feet elevation.<br />

Perhaps nearest to D. parviflora, Ridl., but unbranched,<br />

with larger leaves and a curved corolla, which appears to be<br />

white or yellowish.<br />

Weak branching, glabrous herb. Leaves alternate, thin,<br />

ovate, lanceolate, acuminate, obtuse, base long, narrowed,<br />

usually inaequilaterally, raphides short but very abundant on<br />

both sides. 12.5 cm. long, 4.5 cm. wide or less, midrib scurfy<br />

beneath, petiole i cm. long. Raceme terminal i cm. long, few<br />

flowered, pedicel 2 mm. long. Bract narrow, lanceolate, acute<br />

erect, appressed minutely mucronate with<br />

elevated midrib, .5 mm. long, .1 mm. wide,<br />

corolla tube. Corolla 1.2 cm. long, tube thick, upper lobe<br />

narrowed, lanceolate, obtuse, lower with three short, blunt<br />

long. An<strong>the</strong>rs 2, cells unequal, <strong>the</strong> lower one with a long<br />

conic point, as long as <strong>the</strong> cell. Style glabrous.<br />

Alt. 3,600 to 4,000 feet. The flower appears to have been<br />

yellow with purple veins on <strong>the</strong> palate. The bracts are more<br />

or less tinted with purple. Allied to . J flaccida, Ridl. but with<br />

a much shorter spike and bracts not as long as <strong>the</strong> flowers.<br />
