A large number <strong>of</strong> smaller fruit bats were obtained at<br />

Gurun but those which were obviously immature were not<br />

preserved. As shown by <strong>the</strong> external measurements given<br />

below, <strong>the</strong>y are undoubtedly examples <strong>of</strong> C. b. btachyotis.<br />

14 Males, 13 Females. Gunong Kriang, Kedah.<br />

Gunong Kriang, 700 ft. high, is an isolated and precipitous<br />

limestone mass standing in <strong>the</strong> flat Kedah plain some miles<br />

north <strong>of</strong> Alor Star. It is penetrated by deep tunnel-like caves<br />

and in its walls are many more <strong>of</strong> a shallower nature. These<br />

latter are inhabited by large numbers <strong>of</strong> bats <strong>of</strong> this species<br />

but no o<strong>the</strong>rs were met with.<br />

These examples resemble all o<strong>the</strong>r specimens <strong>of</strong> melanopogon<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> Peninsula and adjacent islands but<br />

appear to differ from <strong>the</strong> typical race in having paler fur and<br />

wing-membranes which are almost white.<br />
