tree in <strong>the</strong> open woods and stream-banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Padang.<br />
Endemic.<br />
158. AcTiNODAPHNE PKUINOSA, Necs. This plant differs<br />
from A. pruinosa <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Penang hills in having <strong>the</strong> leaves<br />
rounded at <strong>the</strong> base.<br />
A shrub on <strong>the</strong> Padang.<br />
Distribution. Singapore, Penang, and Perak.<br />
159. ACTINODAPHNE sp. A tree with grey bark ; leaves<br />
shining above, glaucous beneath and glabrous, with seven<br />
pairs <strong>of</strong> nerves strongly elevate and red beneath, margin<br />
strongly thickened, transverse nerves horizontal, 11 inches<br />
long, 6 inches wide; peiiole i inch; cluster <strong>of</strong> fruit half an<br />
inch across; peduncle thick, J inch long, red, hairy. Drupe<br />
subglobose, J inch long.<br />
Dense woods on <strong>the</strong> Teku River (No. 16,125),<br />
160. LiNDEKA STRICTA, n. Sp.<br />
A shrub with dark purplish bark. Leaves coriaceous,<br />
shining above, glaucescent beneath, lanceolate-acuminate,<br />
acute, base rounded, 3-4 inches long, i inch wide, lo-nerved,<br />
nerves fine, reticulations conspicuous on both surfaces; petiole<br />
thick, ^ inch long, young leaves pubescent. Male flowers on<br />
axillary peduncles, f inch long. Bud globose. Outer bracts<br />
orbicular, imbricate, coriaceous, 4, margins ciliate, inner ones<br />
thinner. Flowers in a head ; pedicels silky, thick, -^ inch long.<br />
Perianth-lobes 6 as long, oblong, linear, obtuse, silky.<br />
Stamens g; filaments short, narrowed upwards. An<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
truncate, oblong, opening introrsely by valves, dehiscing below.<br />
Staminodes 6, adnate, in pairs to 3 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stamens, shorter,<br />
apex yellow as <strong>of</strong> an abortive an<strong>the</strong>r. Rudimentary pistil<br />
cylindric, short, obtuse. Female flowers too young. Fruit<br />
globose, ^ inch through-, black. Peduncle ^ inch, somewhat<br />
thickened, dilated above into a short cup.<br />
Gunong Tahan. Common on <strong>the</strong> Padang. An elegant<br />
bush with very erect leaves.<br />
161. LiNDERA MONTANA, n. Sp.<br />
Shrub. Leaves lanceolate-obtuse, shortly narrowed at<br />
base, coriaceous above, finely reticulate beneath, reticulations<br />
obscure, glaucous, ^-^-^ inches long, i-ij inch wide; nerves<br />
fine, 4 pairs ; petiole | inch long, ra<strong>the</strong>r thick. Capitula<br />
globular, |- inch long, in pairs on extra axillary peduncles, J<br />
inch long, on pedicels as long. Bracts 4, orbicular boat-shaped,<br />
ciliate at <strong>the</strong> edges. Flowers 5, on stout pedicels. Perianthlobes<br />
short-oblong, quadrate, truncate, dotted. Stamens 7,<br />
fertile, as long; filament short, slender; an<strong>the</strong>r wide-oblong,<br />
2-celled ; connective prolonged, rounded. Staminodes several,<br />
irregular. Fruit 2 or 3 toge<strong>the</strong>r, pedicelled on a short<br />
peduncle. Pedicels stout, J inch long, pubescent. Perianth<br />
cup-shaped, | inch long and as wide, shallow, entire, margins<br />
