words. Thus, aAad, <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week, is pronounced <strong>with</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Arabian article as alahadi ; <strong>and</strong> yalasa, " Tuesday," becomes<br />

talata. But <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> Madagascar have one advantage<br />

over <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>an nations in <strong>the</strong>ir kalendar. They divide <strong>the</strong><br />

year into twelve months <strong>with</strong> a name to each. Of <strong>the</strong>se names<br />

six are specific words, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r six named from <strong>the</strong> ordinal<br />

numerals.<br />

The following are a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> words which relate to <strong>the</strong><br />

religion or superstitions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> Madagascar :<br />
