like <strong>the</strong> Rejang, thus .-— k, g, ng,— p, h, m,—t, d, n—ch, j,<br />

il,— y, a, 1, r, s, w,— h, gr. It will be noticed that <strong>the</strong> vowel a<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sibilant are here mixed up <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> liquids. The<br />

We possess two lists <strong>of</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lampung, one in <strong>the</strong><br />

appendix to Sir Stamford Raffles' History <strong>of</strong> Java, <strong>of</strong> 1730<br />

words, <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> Tijdschrift van Nederl<strong>and</strong>'s India <strong>of</strong><br />

1800. Both are valuable, <strong>and</strong> I take <strong>the</strong> last for analysis, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> most recent <strong>and</strong> somewhat <strong>the</strong> fullest. In 1000 words it<br />

contains 194- <strong>Malay</strong>, 84 Javanese, 277 common to <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

<strong>language</strong>s, 41 Sanskrit, <strong>and</strong> 18 Arabic words. The remaining<br />

words, <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> a very small number which are<br />

traced to <strong>the</strong> Sunda, Madurese, <strong>and</strong> Bali, must be presumed<br />

to be native, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y amount to about two-thirds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

whole.<br />

The <strong>grammar</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lampung appears to be nearly <strong>the</strong><br />

same as that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> or Javanese. The relations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nouns are expressed by prepositions, except for <strong>the</strong> possessive<br />
