Ulu (j). The head ; liead, upper or forepart<br />

; interior <strong>of</strong> a country distinguislied<br />

from <strong>the</strong> sea-board ; a fountain<br />

; <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> a river; hilt, h<strong>and</strong>le,<br />

heft. It is rarely used in <strong>Malay</strong> to express<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> an animal, <strong>and</strong> never<br />

in Javanese, but in Sunda it is <strong>the</strong><br />

usual word.<br />

Uluati. The pit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stomach ; literally,<br />

" <strong>the</strong> fountain or source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

heart."<br />

Ulu-ayar. A water-head, a fountain, a<br />

spi-ing ;<br />

name <strong>of</strong> a river on <strong>the</strong> north-<br />

western coast <strong>of</strong> Borneo.<br />

Uhibalang. A chosen warrior, a champion<br />

probably derived from <strong>the</strong> words ulu,<br />

meaning " front," <strong>and</strong> balang, " to<br />

throw, pitch, or cast."<br />

TJlubangsa (j <strong>and</strong> s). A tribe, a family<br />

literally, " source <strong>of</strong> family or race."<br />

Ulun. I, we. It is used by <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong><br />

Patani, on <strong>the</strong> eastern side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

peninsula.<br />

Ulung (jAv). The ^fishing eagle, Falco<br />

pondierianus ; v. Alang.<br />

Ulur. A legal fine or mulct; loss <strong>of</strong><br />

personal liberty in expiation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

crime.<br />

Ulur (j). To veer, to let out ; to give<br />

rope, to pay rope.<br />

Ulurkan. To slacken, to make slack ; to<br />

cause to hang down ; to leng<strong>the</strong>n, to<br />

prolong by letting out ; to stretch out<br />

as <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Uma. Dry arable l<strong>and</strong>, dry field distinguished<br />

from watered or irrigated laud.<br />

Its correlative is sawah ; a cultivated<br />

field, arable l<strong>and</strong> ; to reap corn.<br />

Uma (s). The Hindu goddess Dewi, <strong>the</strong><br />

consort <strong>of</strong> Mahadewa. The Javanese<br />

native <strong>dictionary</strong> gives widyadari, or<br />

" a Hindu celestial nymph," as its synonyme.<br />

Umah (jAV). A house, a dwelling, a<br />

residence. This is, no doubt, <strong>the</strong><br />

same as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> rumah <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

meaning.<br />

Umar (a). The Caliph Omar, <strong>the</strong> third<br />

in succession to Mahomet; v. Am.a.r.<br />

Umat (a), a sect, people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

religion; v. Amat.<br />

Umbang (bat). Distant, far away.<br />

Umbara (jay). Tiic firmament.<br />

Umbi. A tap, or spindle root.<br />

Umbi. Tassel, fringe ; v. Ombai.<br />

Umpak (jAV). Base, foundation, pedestal,<br />

st<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Umpan (j. ampan). A bait.<br />

Umpfit (jAV). To hide, to conooal ; to<br />

keep secret.<br />

Ump.ltan. A secret.<br />

Umpuhan. Flood, inundation ; v. Anipuhan.<br />

Umum (a). Common, general; uncertain,<br />

indefinite; v. Amum.<br />

Unak. Name <strong>of</strong> a prickly plant.<br />

Uuam. A snail, Murcx.<br />

Unan (ben). A fair, a periodical market.<br />

Unchang. A scrip, a little bag, a purse.<br />

Undan. The pelican, Pelicanv^ onocro-<br />

tolos.<br />

Undang (j). To call, to summon, to<br />

invite.<br />

Undangan. A call, a summons ; an invitation.<br />

Undang-balik. To call back, to recal.<br />

Unde. Lot, die ; v. Onde.<br />

Undur. To recede, to retreat, to fall<br />

to retire, to <strong>with</strong>draw.<br />

Unjuk (j). To show, to exhibit; to represent,<br />

to submit; to present, to <strong>of</strong>lfer ;<br />

to stretch out, to extend.<br />

Unjur. To extend or stretch out <strong>the</strong><br />

limbs.<br />

Unta (s). A camel. This quadruped is<br />

wholly unknown except by name, in<br />

every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archipelago.<br />

Ungu (j. wungu). Purple; it is also<br />

applied to a reddish brown colour.
