GO Enjoy a shady autumnal stroll in the tropical retreat of the Jardín Botánico La Concepción. Located just north of the city centre, this lush oasis features towering trees and spectacular seasonal blooms, many imported from Cuba and South America (tel: 952 252 148). ESCAPE For a glimpse of what the area was like before the high-rise hotels emerged on the scene, head for Los Alamos, the stretch of beach and promenade heading east towards Málaga from its main Playamar stretch of sand in Torremolinos. There are some good beach bars here, as well as one or two old-style chiringuitos (beach cabana bars). It’s a popular rollerblading spot, so don your skates and strike out at sunset along with the locals. NO WAY! Even though the best marmalade is made from Seville oranges, the Spanish rarely eat the stuff themselves. They much prefer their slice of toast topped with olive oil, garlic and lashings of crushed tomatoes. And don’t be fooled into thinking you can pick an orange direct from the tree in the street here – they are invariably very bitter indeed. Josephine Quintero
