158 | DESTINATION GUIDES Milan Italy under new management, serving authentic Neapolitanstyle pizzas as well as pasta dishes such as linguine with tomatoes and anchovies. Al Pont de Ferr (55 Ripa di Porta Ticinese, tel: 02 8940 6277) A popular place in the Navigli area, Pont de Ferr has become a Milanese institution, offering traditional cooking, a relaxed atmosphere, and rustic décor with brickwork and beams. EXCLUSIVE Giannino (6 Via Vittor Pisani, tel: 02 6698 6998) Situated near the Stazione Centrale, this long-established restaurant offers a varied menu of mostly traditional dishes, including what could be the best cotoletta alla milanese (veal cutlets) in town. La Pobbia (92 Via Gallarate, tel: 02 3800 6641) A smart setting for a romantic dinner offering a warm welcome and traditional cookery, including Milanese risotto and other regional dishes. Not particularly central, but worth the trip. It’s not cheap, but you won’t regret splashing out. AFTER DARK LOW KEY Ragoo (140 Viale Monza, tel: 02 2600 5157) A small disco bar popular with twentysomethings serving beers, cocktails and snacks. Friday and Saturday nights get busy with music selected by a DJ. Worth the trip north to the Turro metro stop. LIVE MUSIC Nidaba (12 Via Gola, tel: 02 8940 8657) Nidaba hosts a wide range of well-known and up-and-coming music acts from Europe and beyond, with the emphasis on rock, blues and folk music. LATE & LIVELY The Club (97 Corso Garibaldi, tel: 02 655 5318) Not exactly a catchy name, but this is about as happening as it gets on the Milan club scene. Good for spotting celebs and models, the venue is also popular with hip students and twentysomethings. Magazzini Generali (14 Via Pietrasanta, tel: 02 5521 1313) International DJs choose the music on various theme nights at this popular converted warehouse, which is heaving at weekends. As with most Milan clubs the entrance charge includes a fi rst drink. THIS MONTH SHOP Trussardi is one of the fashion capital’s leading brands for men and women’s clothes and accessories. It offers a memorable shopping experience from the elegant leather bags on the ground fl oor to the latest fashions upstairs (5 Piazza della Scala, tel. 02 806 8821). SEE This month the International Motorcycle Expo trade show is at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre. Dedicated to two-wheel afi cionados, the event includes a wealth of attractions including outdoor tests and competitions as well as a section showcasing ecofriendly hybrid and electric vehicles. Exhibitors come from 39 countries and the show claims more than 50,000 attendees. It hits town from 4–7 November; entry €18; after 6pm €12 (tel: 02 677 3511, eicma.it). GO Milan’s medieval castle, the Castello Sforzesco, is a fascinating monument and features an art museum as well as a well-stocked bookshop with a range of arty souvenirs. The castle sits at the south end of the city’s largest park, a great place for a relaxing autumn stroll away from the traffi c fumes. The park is also home to the Triennale, a design centre hosting regular art and design exhibitions. ESCAPE Set along the autostrada, about 40km north-east of Milan, Bergamo is really two cities in one: the higher, older part, the Città Alta, perches on a hill overlooking the more recent Città Bassa. The Old Town is full of atmosphere and the central square, the Piazza Vecchia, is known for its historic architecture, including the Renaissance Palazzo della Ragione. The bell tower has a memorable view over the Po river. Bergamo’s newer quarter is all about shopping, and designer boutiques nestle among banks and fi nancial companies. There are plenty of upmarket bars, too, and even the odd club. NO WAY! Such is the wealth of Milan that if it were a country, it would rank as the 28th largest economy in the world – almost as big as Austria. The French love the jeansand-trainers look, so come here and make sure you fi t right in (52 Grand-Rue Jean-Moulin, tel: 04 6754 4275). SEE Equisud (10–14 November) is the largest horse show in France. Barrel-racing, shoeing, dressage, whispering, rodeo, donkeys, hacking: if it’s horsey, it’s here (equisudmontpellier.com). NO WAY! Leo Malet, author of the 33 Nestor Burma detective novels, was born in Montpellier in March 1909. Samantha David
