TRINIDAD<br />

It is possible that the Vinales Limestone is represented among partlymetamorphosed<br />

limestones and schists of unknown age that form the<br />

axial mountain range of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti), but no fossils<br />

have been found. Otherwise the only other Jurassic in the West Indian<br />

islands is in Trinidad.<br />

Trinidad is a direct continuation of the northern coastal mountains of<br />

Venezuela, from which only a narrow channel separates it, and it is a long<br />

way from Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico. Nevertheless it is described in<br />

this chapter because it is one of the West Indian islands and is more likely<br />

to be looked for in a chapter on middle America than in one on South<br />

America. No Jurassic is known in eastern Venezuela, and Trinidad is<br />

nearly as remote from the Jurassic in the West Venezuelan and Colombian<br />

Andes as from that in Cuba.<br />
