Blumenthal and Fallot in numerous works and most ably revised and<br />

synthesized by Fallot (1931-4). Fallot gives such a wealth of information,<br />

with long lists of ammonites, that it is impossible here to attempt more<br />

than a bare outline of his results, laying stress mainly on the ammonite<br />

succession and its significance for wider correlations, and omitting any<br />

attempt to reproduce his brilliant analysis of the distribution of faunas<br />

and facies within the area, with his important tectonic arguments. No<br />

one wishing to follow up those lines of enquiry can dispense with his<br />

treatise.<br />

[NEOCOMIAN<br />

In the west and centre there is an unbroken passage up from Tithonian<br />

into similar Berriasian and Valanginian limestones or marls with<br />

Neocomites, Olcostephanus, etc. (Fallot, 1934, pp. 76, 86, 105, 107). In<br />

the NE., 'Wealden Beds' up to 100 m. thick unconformably overlie<br />

various parts of the Jurassic. The boundary of these beds is shown by<br />

Brinkmann & Gallwitz (1933, p. 75, fig. 16), but neither their age nor<br />

their relation to the marine Neocomian is established.]<br />

TITHONIAN (up to 250 m.)<br />

Bertrand & Kilian (1889, p. 439) recognized two subdivisions, linked<br />

by numerous ammonites in common, but the lower division containing<br />

some Jurassic forms and the upper some Cretaceous. Fallot (1934)<br />

defined the two more precisely and recognized also a Middle Tithonian.<br />

Upper Tithonian. Fallot (1934, pp. 90, 91, 100) gives three long lists<br />

of forms from different localities, the following being the most important<br />

species:—<br />

In the Penibetic region the Upper Tithonian with Calpionella alpina,<br />

developed in some places in the form of red crinoidal limestone with<br />

Spiticeras celsum (Oppel), overlaps on to the Palaeozoic (Fallot, 1934,<br />

pp. 78, 79).<br />
