THE BRITISH ISLES<br />

The British Jurassic having been summarized already (Arkell, 1933), the<br />

present account is reduced to essentials for understanding the ammonite<br />

succession as a basis for correlation elsewhere. The list of references<br />

(p. 643) contains only items published since 1933 and consequently is<br />

fuller than the lists for other regions of Europe, which are selections of<br />

the most important sources published in the last hundred years. (For<br />

British Jurassic bibliography before 1933, see Arkell, 1933.)<br />

The British Jurassic rocks comprise a highly variable series of formations<br />

laid down as shelf and trough deposits upon the Upper Triassic<br />

Keuper lake beds and thin marine Rhaetic Beds. They reach a maximum<br />

thickness of about 1000 m. in the south of England and in Yorkshire,<br />
