superb rocks resemble the cliffs of Purbeck, about 15 miles due west of ttem.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir image impresses <strong>its</strong>elf firmly on the minds of many emigrants, <strong>and</strong> thous<strong>and</strong>s<br />

amongst them, when these objects vanish from their sight, have looked upon Europe<br />

for the last time in their lives. <strong>The</strong> southern portion of the Isle of Wight is one<br />

of the most picturesque districts in Engl<strong>and</strong>. St. Catherine's Down, the most<br />

elevated summit of the isl<strong>and</strong>, rises near <strong>its</strong> southern angle to a height of 830<br />

feet, <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>s an immense horizon, extending from Portl<strong>and</strong> Bill to Beachy<br />

Head, <strong>and</strong> sometimes even beyond the Channel with <strong>its</strong> numerous ships, to the<br />
