THE BEITISH ISLES.<br />

Eilhloc, at the point where the Shannon issues from Lough Derg,<br />

is a bustlino- pLice, with quays, docks, warehouses, slate quarries, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

remarkable cathedral, founded in the twelfth century. An old bridge joins it to<br />

Ballina, in Limerick.<br />

<strong>The</strong> county of Limerick lies to the south of the Shannon, <strong>and</strong> consists for the<br />

most part of a plain of exceeding fertility, known on that account as the " Golden<br />

Vale." Liinerich, the county town, is seated in the midst of this plain ; but although<br />

it is the natural maritime emporium of the whole of the Shannon valley, <strong>its</strong><br />

commerce is trifling, <strong>and</strong> even modern houses in the centre of the town wear<br />

an air of dilapidation. Vessels of 600 tons can reach <strong>its</strong> docks, but owing to <strong>its</strong><br />

remote position on the western coast, the town is not able to compete with
