which he found in the harbour. Sf. Bccs, an interesting old village to the south<br />

of Whitehaven, is widely known as the seat of a college for the training of Church<br />

of Engl<strong>and</strong> clergymen. Earcnglass, on a shallow bay into which the Esk <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Irt (the latter the emissary of Wastwater) discharge themselves, engages in oyster-<br />

fishing <strong>and</strong> the coasting trade. It is a quiet place, whilst Milloin, on the estuary<br />

of the Duddon, rings with the noise of iron <strong>and</strong> steel works.<br />

We now enter that portion of the county which is so famed for <strong>its</strong> scenery,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the capital of which is Keswick. Situate in a beautiful vale under Skiddaw,<br />

<strong>and</strong> near the foot of Derwentwater, one of the most charming lakes, Keswick<br />

has naturally become the principal head-quarters for tourists. Amongst the spots<br />

most frequently visited are the Falls of Lodore, near the head of the lake,<br />

immortalised by Southey's well-known lines commencing<br />

Greta Hall, where Southey lived from 1803 till the time of his death, st<strong>and</strong>s near<br />

Keswick. <strong>The</strong> Upper Derwent, in <strong>its</strong> course to Derwentwater, flows through the<br />

beautiful valley of Borrowdale, which formerly, before the mines in Siberia had<br />

been discovered, supplied the best " wadd," or plumbago, for the manufacture
