<strong>The</strong>re are alum works in the vicinity, <strong>and</strong> the herring fishery gives employ-<br />

ment to many of the <strong>inhabitants</strong>, but the town is more widely known for <strong>its</strong> jet<br />

ornaments. This industry has been carried on here from immemorial times, as<br />

is proved by the discoveries made in the hones which crown the neighbouring<br />

hills, <strong>and</strong> the pilgrims who during the Middle Ages paid their devotions in the<br />

abbey of Whitby never failed to carrj' away with them a cross or a rosary made<br />

of jet.<br />

Scarborough, the " Queen of the northern watering-places," possesses resources<br />

<strong>and</strong> amusements far exceeding those of <strong>its</strong> neighbour Whitby. It is built<br />

at the foot <strong>and</strong> on the top of two cliffs, separated by a chasm spanned by a<br />

lofty bridge, which joins the old town to the Spa, Museum, <strong>and</strong> other buildings<br />

specially constructed for the accommodation of the 20,000 visitors who annually<br />

flock to it. <strong>The</strong> Marine Aquarium is larger than that of Brighton. From the<br />

keep of the Norman castle which comm<strong>and</strong>s the old town we look down with<br />

admiration upon the s<strong>and</strong>s which stretch along the foot of the limestone cliffs.<br />

Scarborough has been a place of commerce for centuries, <strong>and</strong> <strong>its</strong> port, protected by<br />

two piers, affords shelter to the largest vessels. <strong>The</strong> coasting trade carried on is<br />

considerable, <strong>and</strong> the herring fishery is a source of profit. Still the importance<br />

of the town is derived almost exclusively from the crowds of visitors annually<br />

attracted by <strong>its</strong> picturesque scenery, bracing air, smooth s<strong>and</strong>s, chalybeate springs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> varied resources for amusement.<br />
