dation to the famous Pomfret marbles <strong>and</strong> a collection of paintings <strong>and</strong> drawings,<br />

most precious amongst which are 162 original designs by Eaphael <strong>and</strong> 79 by<br />

Michael Angelo. Eadcliffe Library, named after <strong>its</strong> founder, the physician of<br />

"William III., to whom the university is likewise indebted for <strong>its</strong> observatory,<br />

occupies a h<strong>and</strong>some rotunda, surmounted by a dome rising from an octagonal base.<br />

<strong>The</strong> buildings known as the "Schools," which were once used for lectures, in<br />

which a suite of rooms is set apart for public examinations, are now mainly occu-<br />

pied by the famous Bodleian Library, thus named after <strong>its</strong> founder. Dr. Bodley,<br />

who died in 1612. This collection, one of the largest in the world, for it contains<br />

400,000 printed volumes <strong>and</strong> 25,000 MSS., is more especially rich in oriental<br />

literature, <strong>and</strong> possesses the MSS. collected by Dr. Clarke on Mount Athos. It is<br />

entitled to a copy of every work printed in Engl<strong>and</strong> ;<br />
