Detailed <strong>Report</strong> on Objectives, Methodology and Results – AMBA Funded Project The MSU barley improvement program utilizes single seed descent to speed our pedigree-based breeding program. Montana’s cool, dry summers provide poor environments for most pathogens, making it possible for our program to focus largely on quality and adaptation. Our use of exotic sources of specific genes for which we develop tightly linked molecular markers to utilize in backcrossing has resulted in several advances in our germplasm pool, with the most recent being the deployment of qGPC6H throughout our malting germplasm base. We evaluate approximately 20,000 F5 families each year from 100-150 unique crosses. From these we select about 2000 plants that provide seed for the following years’ unreplicated 2-row evaluation. Approximately 250 of these are selected for advancement to our preliminary yield trial, planted on dryland at Huntley, MT and under irrigation at Bozeman’s A.H. Post research farm. Sixty of these lines are advanced into our 64-entry 5 location Early Yield Trial, and the twenty best of these advance to our 11 location statewide yield trial. Lines with malting potential are evaluated by the USDA malt barley lab at Madison, WI. Lines demonstrating superior agronomic and malting performance are advanced into the AMBA Pilot Testing System, and successful lines are proposed for plant scale evaluation. The results of this system can be seen in tables 1 and 2. Haxby (PI646160) is our highest yielding, highest testweight feed barley variety for dryland producers. Hockett, Geraldine and Craft approach Haxby’s superb local adaptation, and surpass Harrington in yield and test weight. 44

In today’s economic environment, the 10-13 bu/ac advantage that Geraldine provides relative to Harrington and Metcalfe will result in a roughly $40/acre advantage to producers. Should Geraldine be recommended by AMBA, it will find favor with Montana’s high yield environment producers because of its lack of a yield potential penalty relative to the best feed barley varieties in production.
