quality, on the other hand, remain largely unchanged since the 1940’s, and do not
necessarily address the needs of brewers. Research directed at re-evaluation of some
test methods, and their foundations may be particularly pertinent. We are proposing to
continue with evaluation of factors that control laboratory malt extract, and their
relationship to extract factors that are not routinely determined, such as fermentability. A
chemometrics approach will be utilized.
Nevertheless, Fusarium Head Blight remains the most critical problem facing barley
producers and the malting and brewing industries. We will continue to work in
conjunction with breeders and pathologists on the development of FHB resistant
cultivars.
