3.41. Table 3.13 also presents results on probabilities of access<strong>in</strong>g aids and appliances<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> various characteristics. While many of the results are similar <strong>to</strong> probabilities of<br />
seek<strong>in</strong>g treatment, there are a few <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g differences:<br />
• female PWD are even less likely relative <strong>to</strong> male PWD <strong>to</strong> receive aids and appliances than<br />
they are <strong>to</strong> seek treatment (this may also be a fac<strong>to</strong>r of the low number of women technicians)<br />
• while those disabled from birth still have lower rates of access (around two thirds the level of<br />
other PWD), the situation is considerably better than for seek<strong>in</strong>g treatment relative <strong>to</strong> PWD<br />
who acquired their disabilities later <strong>in</strong> life.<br />
• the disability-specific probabilities are quite different <strong>to</strong> those for seek<strong>in</strong>g treatment, <strong>with</strong><br />
visually impaired people substantially more likely <strong>to</strong> receive aids and appliances, and those<br />
<strong>with</strong> speech impairments hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>significant probability.<br />
