5.4.6. Proposed National Park at El Fekdja 2517 ha
There is currectly a 417 ha fecced to protect the barbary deer of El
Feidja (~ectioc 3.4.1.1 ). The fecce was erected ic 1966 with the help of
the CTZ. Sicce thee, there has beer almost co hsmac distzrbarce ic the
reserve acd the deer populatioc has increased sigcificactly. To
accornodate the iccreasirg deer populatioc and protect the rest of the
diverse fama acd flora, a 2517 ha area is beicg cocsidered for a catioral
park. The area is populated by about 160 families (IUCN 1987), bat the
wooded portjocs are ucirhabited.
Currect facilities at El Feidja irclude a forestry post with a small
museum acd an ecclosure for holdicg icjured deer ard public display. If a
catiocal park is cre~ted there will be ceed for a general nacagemect plac,
a park headqaarters, staff, vehicles, remodelicg of the mixex, acd
eqaipaect .
5.4.7. Proposed Natiocal Park at Hamada ard Djebel Sidi Toui :2,003 ha
Altho~gh 532 Fedna N.P. is ic ec arid regioc, a true desert ecosystem
is missicg fron Tucisia's catioral park cetwork. Theyefore a rational
park - biosphere reserve has beer proposed for the area araucd Djebel Sidi
Todi (see Sectioc 3.5.4). The soath foot of the djebel has beec protected
from grazicg for abo~t 20 years, with dramatic vegetztioc respocse, acd
some of the last renaicicg dcspoilt steppe is ic the project area (IUCI~
1987).
The GTZ, ATPIJE acd KAB committee are icvolved ic the research acd
preparatory placcicg for the park. There is currectly ar experimertal
statioc of the 5edecice IRA ir the area, where camel/vegetatioc
icteractiocs ere beicg st~died. IRA fbcilities are likel:~ to be dsed 1c
the future park. The catiocal coctributioc to the reserve has Seee 91,609
m ~dcisiac Dicars. The bddget is dsed for persoccel, wells, racge
improvemeet o~tside the reserve acd protectioc of the reservr, but ac
additional 66,000 US dollars is still reeded for eqzipmect, traicjcg erd e
cocs~ltart (!'.ic. Agr. : 985).
5.4.8. Galiton Reserve 650 ha
The islands of Galitoc (27 ha) acd La Fouchelle (14 ha) acd a 0.5 sea
mile radi~s ic the Galite archipelago were desigcated as a strict cature
reserve ic :980. There is jeternationally jmportact fauca, iccludicg monk
