4. FOREST PROTECTION
A cuxect policy of the Forest? Diyectorate is to desigrate 20dn of
all forests as regeneration forests, thus prohibiting grazicg and
harvesting of foyest products. Reforestatjor or, public lards is beir,g
iccreased to icc-ease the ha3estable resource and to cortrol erosioc. Ic
addition, law 66-256 of 23 December 1986 requjres that at least % of the
area of each private property be reforested. While these policies and
laws me good ic theory, the actual results have faller sho-t of their
goal due to ficaccial, administrative, demographic acd sociological
problems.
Ic order to cocserve some of the importact forest areas acd thei:
associated flora acd fama, seve-a1 reserves ard ratixal parks have beer
established. Those protected areas are discussed ir Sectlor 5.4 of Pa-t I
(~iological Diversity survey of Taisia).
The 'tropical fo-ests' of Tarisia co;ld be imp-ovei 3- pxtectsd by
assistirg with plarricg,traicjng, equipmert acd staff ir the a-eas of:
Refo-estatioc (icc-eased yea-ly pla~ticg of app-opriate species)
Proper forest macaqenert ( placcicg , p ~otec tior, fo-est. improvement
practices)
Species selectior (placticg species compatible with the ratural
ecosystems)
Upgradicg protectioc of rese-ves ard parks (see biological
diversity arcex). Of special icterest ic regard to troptcal
forests is Boz Korrire Natiocal Park, which is domirated by thuya
forests. A Gece-a1 Maragement Plar acd budget have beer proposed,
biit rot implemerted due to lack of firacces.
