Early Childhood Education & Family Studies Options Available<br />

To Students<br />

It is important to note that there is a wide range of difference in<br />

educational requirements for early childhood professionals both<br />

locally and nationally. Check with the contact person at the college<br />

you are planning to attend prior to enrolling in course work.<br />

Associate Degrees<br />

• Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood<br />

Education: prepares individuals to work with children in early<br />

childhood programs, with a specialization in either center-based,<br />

family childcare, or administration of early childhood programs.<br />

Courses are scheduled to accommodate those who are already<br />

working in the field. (Offered at GCC, RSC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood<br />

Education: designed to prepare students for employment as<br />

early childhood teachers in a variety of educational programs.<br />

Students learn effective teaching skills as they apply<br />

developmentally appropriate early childhood educational theory in<br />

the classroom setting. Courses have been selected with a focus<br />

on developing an educational career ladder. (Offered at PVCC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood<br />

Development: designed to meet the needs of individuals who<br />

are interested in working in early childhood. The program<br />

emphasizes working with multi-linguistic and multi-cultural<br />

children. Upon completion students will be equipped to work<br />

effectively with children and families in both school and home<br />

environments and also initiate upward career movement or<br />

improve existing skills. (Offered at SMCC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood<br />

Development: prepares students to enter a professional field<br />

which encompasses many services provided directly to young<br />

children, birth to age 8, and their families. (Offered at SCC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Early Care and<br />

Education: The Early Care and Education program is based upon<br />

an inclusive vision of high-quality services for all children.<br />

Provided area a sequence of lively, interactive classes and a<br />

variety of field experiences, which greatly expand the student's<br />

understanding of children. Unique student teaching opportunities<br />

are offered in the Evelyn H. Warren Child Development Lab, a<br />

multi-age preschool that is accredited by the National Association<br />

for the Education of Young Children. (Offered at MCC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood<br />

Education and Administration: designed to meet the needs of<br />

persons interested in pursuing careers in early childhood<br />

education or currently employed in preschools, child care centers,<br />

extended day programs, agencies, or other early-childhood care<br />

facilities. Students specializing in this area develop the abilities to<br />

administer all facets of an early childhood program, along with<br />

the knowledge of child development and early childhood<br />

education. Personal characteristics for this field are love of<br />

children, patience, creativity, and interest in techniques for<br />

enhancing interpersonal relationships with children and adults.<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Family Life<br />

Education: prepares individuals to enter the family life education,<br />

human development, or child and family organizations field at the<br />

paraprofessional level. (Offered at GCC, RSC)<br />

• Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Family Development:<br />

prepares students to work with families, identify needs, and<br />

acquire resources that strengthen family functioning. Includes<br />

skills in assessing and controlling needed resources, decision<br />

making, problem solving, communication, parenting, and child<br />

development education. (Offered at PC)<br />

• Associate in Transfer Partnership (ATP) in Early Childhood<br />

Education: designed for students planning on becoming certified<br />

teachers in Early Childhood Education (Birth through 3rd grade).<br />

Transfers as a block without loss of credit to Northern Arizona<br />

University. (Offered at GCC, MCC, RSC, and SCC)<br />

Post Baccalaureate Program<br />

• Post Baccalaureate Early Childhood Teacher Education<br />

Program: designed for individuals with a baccalaureate degree<br />

who want to become an early childhood teacher. The program<br />

enables students to obtain an Arizona Department of Education<br />

(ADE) early childhood teaching certificate that meets Arizona<br />

requirements to teach in a public school program, including<br />

children from birth through third grade. (Offered at RSC)<br />

Professional Development in Early Childhood Education<br />

• Early Childhood Endorsement Coursework: courses are<br />

accepted by the Arizona Department of Education and lead to<br />

Early Childhood Endorsement for individuals who have a current<br />

elementary or special education teaching certificate, or are about<br />

to receive one. The Early Childhood Endorsement meets Arizona<br />

requirements to teach in a public school program, including<br />

children from birth through third grade. (Offered at RSC, MCC)<br />

• Child Development Associate (CDA) Coursework: courses<br />

are accepted by the Council of Professional Recognition toward<br />

fulfillment of CDA requirements. (Offered at EMCC, MCC, PVCC)<br />

Academic Certificate<br />

• Academic Certificate (AC) in Early Childhood Education: is<br />

designed to provide students with an understanding of universal<br />

concepts and basic practices which are the foundation for early<br />

childhood care and education. The Certificate includes courses<br />

identified as core elements of early care and education such as<br />

health, safety, nutrition, curriculum, family values, community,<br />

diversity, professionalism, guidance and discipline, and child<br />

development as well as general education courses relevant to<br />

early childhood education. (Offered at RSC)<br />

Certificates of Completion<br />

• Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Early Childhood<br />

Education: designed for those who are interested in studying<br />

and working with young children. It prepares individuals to work<br />

with children in early child programs, with a specialization in<br />

either center-based or family child care. Courses are scheduled to<br />

accommodate those who are already working in the field.<br />
