Deaf Studies<br />

Certificate of Completion — CCL 5333<br />

39-45 Credits<br />

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Deaf Studies program is<br />

designed to provide students with basic sign language skills and an<br />

overview of issues related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. It<br />

is primarily designed for individuals who are preparing for or are<br />

already employed in business, industry, or public service who have<br />

daily contact with the general public. This program will not prepare<br />

the individual as an interpreter; it will enhance the ability to provide<br />

services to many deaf individuals.<br />

Program Notes: + indicates course has prerequisites and/or<br />

corequisites. Students must earn a grade of “B” or better in CRE<strong>10</strong>1<br />

(or equivalent as indicated by assessment), (ENG<strong>10</strong>1 or ENG<strong>10</strong>7),<br />

IPP205, SLG120 (if chosen as a Restricted Elective), SLG202,<br />

SLG203, and SLG204. Students should work closely with the<br />

Program Director on CRE<strong>10</strong>1 decision.<br />

Interpreter Preparation<br />

Associate in Applied Science — AAS 3332<br />

90-97 Credits<br />

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Interpreter Preparation<br />

program includes general education coursework as well as an<br />

emphasis of skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken<br />

English. In addition, knowledge of Deaf culture, intercultural<br />

communication, ethics, laws, and professional behavior for interpreters<br />

is provided. Both theoretical and practical training prepares students<br />

for entrance into the field of interpreting, serving both deaf and<br />

hearing consumers in a variety of settings. A Certificate of Completion<br />

(CCL) is also available.<br />

Program Notes: + indicates course has prerequisites and/or<br />

corequisites. Admission into the Interpreter Preparation Program is<br />

available to a limited number of applicants. Students accepted into<br />

the program begin the following fall semester. See an academic<br />

advisor for application requirements and procedures. Students must<br />

earn a grade of "C" or better for all courses required within the<br />

program.<br />

GED, or equivalent. Completion of program prerequisites. Formal<br />
